Last month at Kingpins Show, sustainable denim was at the top of its game and I had the pleasure to talk to LEED certified mill, Artistic Fabric & Garment Industries. They are the leading supplier of premium denim fabrics and garments in the world and are based in Pakistan.
This past year, 1120 tonnes of chemicals were saved, 10,570,320 kWh of energy was saved, and 24,469,336 gallons of water was saved.
This vertically integrated company is committed to innovating superior quality products while maintaining their sustainable practices to protect their workers and the environment. They are constantly exploring new ways to reuse production waste and collaborate with global partners to create sustainable business models.
Their new technology that was debuted at Kingpins really caught my attention, as it seems like one of the most sustainable fibres ever! They have discovered a way to turn sugar into fibre and has been woven into fabric as the weft threads. This is also known as PLA fibre, which is a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable biomass, typically from fermented plant starch such as from corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp. And get this. It only takes 3-6 months to biodegrade!!!
Artistic Fabric & Garment Industries are not only sustainable conscious, they are socially conscious, as well. They sponsor WWF Mangrove Plantation and TCF Schools, while also initiating the PACE program founded by the Gap Inc. This program supports women in the garment industry and are given foundation life skills, such as technical training and support, to help them advance in the workplace and in life.
